In Perspective
My grandfather is dying. Barring some kind of weird medical turnaround - he's going into hospice care today.
All the other stuff seems kind of extremely dumb, now.
And yet, it's a beautiful day
I think I've given myself a hangover from how stressful yesterday was. This is not fair. I didn't even have the drunken fun that you usually get before a hangover - just...stress.
Fuckin' ta-ing.
I really love the class I'm teaching in this semester, I really do. I enjoy discussion group, I enjoy lectures...I just...HATE being in charge of grading.
Also? What is up with students who can't figure out what TA to give their work to?

Papersssssssss
I've been grading papers for so long that it's starting to sound appealing to have my eyeballs fall out.
In other, astounding news, some Reps are actually trying to get impeacement to be a possibility.
I have to say that I'm startled - I didn't think anything would even get this far. But, as Dan Savage says: ITMFA!

hello outrage
"BILL NAPOLI: A real-life description to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life."
South Dakota has passed a law that will come into effect on July 1st, unless it's somehow stopped, that bans ALL abortions except for those in which the mother's life is in danger. That's right. Even in the case of rape or incest. Bill Napoli, apparantly, thinks that abortion is only all right in cases like the one described above.
Reading THIS gave me a chill.
Fuck you, Napoli.
Goodbye Spud
...So yeah, I'm late getting this up. But in my defense -
Okay, so I have no defense.
Bryce's visit started out with not a bang, but a long pained whimper. First, it was raining. Disgusting, gray, on-and-off pouring, so that our parking lot filled with water as it so often does. I was waiting to leave and chatting with him on his phone. They got stuck on the runway, but finally took off. So after a bit, I went outside and got into my car, with my airport map all printed out, and -
Nothing.
That's right. Not that revving sound you get when the engine is trying to catch. All I got was all the electronics turning on (so I knew it wasn't the battery) and then...nothing else.
I go inside. I call my parents. I try not to cry. I call Bryce - leave a message.
So when he arrives, we talk a little. The car is broken, okay - I can't find a rental place that's open, so I can't rent a car. Which means he'll take a taxi. Sucky for him, but the day isn't ruined yet - until his luggage doesn't arrive.
No bags. No car.
The evening was capped off by an inability to get a taxi *from* the casino, where we were insulted by a snotty concierge who informed us that This was Not New York City, where they have Subways and Buses that run All Night Long. And if we wanted a taxi, we'd have to wait until 3 am, probably.
Bastard.
The rest of the visit was much, much better than the first day. We ate out lots, and I bought a guitar! (Whee!) And Bryce? Bryce is super cool.
Oh, and he did finally get his luggage back - as we were driving to the airport they called him. Of course, all the stuff inside was wet. American Airlines, You Suck!
