Geek Wishing

From Rachel, who got it from Kathy, who got it from...outer space, maybe. Or faeries.

If you are reading my site, there's a good possibility that you are, in some fashion, a geek.

And the thing about being a geek is... sometimes the family is a little less understanding of your geeky tendencies. THey think you're too old for toys, or cartoons, and really, shouldn't you be saving up for a house and some appliances to fill it with? Even if they're supportive of your geekitude, they don't always know just what it is that you're looking for, and so you end up going back to the store to return the well-intentioned gifts.

So...this holiday, make a wish.

Step One: Make a post (Public, Friendslocked, Filtered... Whatever you're comfortable with!) to your LJ [or your regular journal. Not everything is about LJers, yaknow!]. The post should contain your list of 10 GEEKY holiday wishes; the wishes can be anything at all, from simple ("I want a fanfic!") to medium ("I want toys!") to really big ("I want a WACOM tablet/digital camera/really explicit slash fic"). The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or the MaccaBee, or your secret special friend) could get in touch with you. Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two: Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part: If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have an extra of a certain toy, or a gift certificate you won't use, or access to a REALLY AWESOME fan-artist who just might be convinced to apply their skills to some seriously WRONG illustrated smut, do it...

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not; it's your call! There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just... Wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special...

My own wishes:

1) Someone to deliver, at the beginning of each month, a fresh ream of printer paper, a dry-erase marker, some mechanical pencils and paperclips.

2) A poster-sized list of all the 'good books' that I should read. The canon, the newer things - basically everything that a good, well-educated person is supposed to know. In the order I should read it, so I can hang up the list and check them off as I complete each one.

3) Xena, seasons 2 and 3 on dvd. If they aren't obscenely fucking expensive, then I scowl at them.

4) A giant stack of mead composition notebooks.

5) A huge assortment of colored gel pens, with which to grade papers. (Okay, and draw on myself)

6) A computer chair. A high-backed, executive style chair with good lumbar support, arm rests, and a head-cushioney place so I can lean back and think without straining my neck.

7) Used books about writing, or for writers. Stacks and stacks of them, all around me.

8) One of those lovely tables made for laptops, that you can slide around so that you can put the laptop in front of you wherever, tilted, etc.

9) A pen and ink set, with a wax letter-sealing thingy too.

10) A fairytale written with me in it. I don't know if it's truly geeky, but....
