I’ve started trying to fit aerobics back into my schedule. It’s not that I’ve managed to shake more time loose in my life (if anything there’s less; as the weather’s gotten nicer my time spent at the barn has grown exponentially — I’m not home until 8:30 or later most riding days), and it’s not that I’ve gained weight (I’m still under 1. The official goal weight I set with WW, 2. The secret goal weight I set for myself, and 3. The super-secret goal wist I had in the back of my mind when I set #1). I just feel better when I’m a little sore sometimes. It makes me feel fit. Riding is too much fun to feel like work, even when I ache the next day (which isn’t often, but lately I’ve made it a goal to go stirrupless for at least ten minutes per ride, and longer if things are going well, and let me tell you if you want a thigh [and hip and lower back and etc] workout, go stirrupless on a thoroughbred with a big bouncy trot).

Speaking as a frequent multi-level parentheticalist (yes, that’s TOTALLY a word (okay, maybe not)), I suggest not using 1), 2), etc in the middle of a parenthetical. My poor little brain was trying to figure out how to parse “I’ve gained weight (I’m still under 1) the official” for SOOO long.

But anyway, I’m super proud of your weight loss and exercise successes. Don’t dismiss exercise that’s fun though! That’s the best kind. Not that say that the awesome post-exercise feeling isn’t good for “feeling fit”… Blah blah blah, you rock.

Duly noted and changed. (The way I number lists, that is, not my feelings about exercise; though while we’re on the subject of parentheticals, I think yours could use a dose of mathematic notation [that is, use of secondary brackets to better denote levels of remove, which I think makes it easier to keep track of the thread of the tangents (I always alternate back and forth between the curvy ones and the boxy ones)].)

Yeah, your method makes sense. I learned mine back on the Barenaked Ladies mailing list, where one guy was so known for his multi-parentheticals that we used to keep score of his best. It was 2^n points for each one (n being the number of levels deep), and it was additive. So a three level one followed by a single level one was 8 + 1 = 9 points. He would write long e-mails, so his point total could get quite high (and no, I didn’t just start doing it because points were involved [okay, maybe a little]).
