» to keep you occupied

This looked fun:

Post the first sentence of ten of your favorite books, and see if your friends can figure out what those books are.

And it was, though I think less than half of them are obvious, even to people who’ve read the books. And I had a really hard time picking books, especially since I wasn’t at home where I could see my shelf. So I just went for a variety of what I can recall recommending to people lately.

So fun for me, impossible for you. You have twelve days. Go!

  1. She stands up in the garden where she has been working and looks into the distance. The English Patient, Michael Ondaatje
  2. My suffering left me sad and gloomy. Life of Pi, Yann Martel
  3. May in Ayemenem is a hot, brooding month. The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy
  4. For a man of his age, fifty-two, divorced, he has, to his mind, solved the problem of sex rather well.
  5. Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge. The Blind Assassin, Margaret Atwood
  6. Shadow had done three years in prison. American Gods, Neil Gaiman
  7. “Your grandfather,” said Vanyel’s brawny, fifteen-year-old cousin Radevel, “was crazy.” Magic’s Pawn, Mercedes Lackey
  8. Imagine a ruin so strange it must never have happened. The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver
  9. In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
  10. This is my favorite book in all the world, though I have never read it.

My god, I actually know one. Well, the number of times they made me read/watch that version of The Great Gatsby (with Law and Order’s Sam Waterston!) in high school, I should by now. ;D

    10. Gatsby. ::nodnod::

I have guesses for a few others, but I am unsure so I’ll refrain.

Er, 9. Number 9, not number 10. That teaches me to pay attention.

I’m at work and IE is totally messing up the text — it’s all blurry and collapsing in on itself. I might come back later to see if I know the ones I can’t read. Nevertheless, my guesses as of right now:

    1. The English Patient. Of course.

    2. Life of Pi. SUCH a good book.

    3. The God of Small Things, which I never read (but always wanted to).

    5. The Blind Assassin. Mmm, Atwood.

    6. American Gods — yay, Neil!

    8. The Poisonwood Bible. Heh.

::pout:: Well, someone already got American Gods, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say:

    7) Magic’s Pawn.

Duuuude. Y’all rock. I’m impressed. Though, Sarah, I might’ve guessed you’d know nearly all of them.

Stupid work. ::shuffles feet:: I didn’t even get to play. ::huff!::

I totally know number 10, too — know it and can’t remember it at the same time. It’ll hit me at three o’clock in the morning and I’ll come rushing back (ashamed, relieved, and giddy) to guess.
