» Idol blah blah blah

I missed the first performance, as I usually do, which was unfortunate because Nadia’s one of my favorites. Girl’s got fire. Still loved Bo; loved especially the audience going completely nuts over his baby picture (which I noted they didn’t really for anyone else — also pleasing).

The judges all seemed to mildly poo-poo Carrie’s performance, for which I kind of hate them, because she was actually interesting to me tonight. Her hair and makeup looked great, and — I don’t know. I liked that she was trying to change it up, but I didn’t quite buy it. Her performances all still have seams, which always pretty much wrecks it for me. There are moments she breaks out of the song and her connection with the studio audience. And I won’t even talk about her connection with the television audience, because that’s something I’ve always felt she sucks at. She just looks sort of vacant when she stares into the camera. Like half her mind’s somewhere else, and sometimes (when it’s more of a freaked out vacant stare) I read it as her concentrating really hard on her singing and performance, and other times I think she’s just bored. I hate watching performers who are thinking too hard about their performances, because then I have to too.

And I think that’s a big part of why I love Nadia. She’s captivating to watch; you don’t get the sense that she’s thinking so deliberately about her performance. Or at least she’s got the face part of her performances down better than Carrie. (Er, the odd sort of rage-face notwithstanding, and since that isn’t so much a conscious-of-performing thing as it is a Nadia thing, I don’t mind it.) Again, I missed her last night, so I can only cross my fingers about how she did.

The biggest surprise for me was Constantine, who only molested us a very little with his eyes, and generally…well. He was pretty much amazing. Which is frustrating because I want to continue hating him. I resented the whole stupid ‘hard-core rocker band-betraying blah blah blah’ from the get-go. And I don’t like his smarmy camera molestation. But he just…keeps getting better. And it makes me feel all manipulated because I know they want me to love and adore him and I don’t and I won’t dammit. But I loved him when I saw him in RENT! and…bleh. I wish there wasn’t so much pressure to like him because it makes me feel skanky for having enjoyed his performance last night. Especially since it was Bohemian Rhapsody and…dude. I mean, Bohemian Rhapsody? There are so many ways you could fuck that up and he just — didn’t. His whole existence on this show is perturbing.

What else?

Vonzell remains adorable. I continue to love her.

Anwar continues to have a very big, pleasing voice, and continues to slowly grate on me with his earnestness and big eyes and big grin and he’s so gooey and happy I sort of want to slap him, just to destroy a little of his faith in humanity and maybe help give his performances more than just the one dimension.

I continue to dislike Anthony but feel vaguely bad for it. It’s like hating a puppy. But every time he steps on the stage my mind screams Enrique Inglesias, Enrique Inglesias! And I don’t know why. I think it’s the feet-apart hip-cock and the way he just stands there during Every Performance methodically stroking the air with alternating hands and grooving vaguely on his own self. It’s like he’s going for the same particular sort of sexiness in the same way as Enrique and both of them miss for me. Except as far as Enrique goes? My biggest memory of him as a performer is centered on one time he might’ve been on the Grammy Awards or something? And then the time at my senior class lock-in right after graduation when Nimo was hypnotized and forced to lip-synch to ‘La Vida Loca’. So I wish Anthony would just leave.

I would be happiest, though, if Scott took his stupid Jesus praising and smart mouthing and left. Sometimes I like it when the judges get sassed a little, but only from people who are open to their critisicm. Scott’s got a whole lot of temerity, and dude? Jesus is not the one voting for you. Leave him off my freaking television.

I haven’t been watching or listening, but I was sorely disappointed to discover that Scott was still on. I mean, seriously… I didn’t like Scott just from the fact that he was an ass and didn’t show up for rehearsals on time when they had to do the group thing. And he’s not all that great technically and he just doesn’t have any star quality, so what the hell, you know?

On another note, we’re so inverses on the Constantine thing. I liked him, at the beginning, and started disliking him as the show progressed. Last time you wrote about him, it made me feel easy ;P

I don’t think we got the full story with the rehearsal thing. I read somewhere that they edited it oddly and there was some reason he didn’t show, like he was locked out of the hotel or something. That could’ve just been speculation. I remember a short part where his other group members seem to’ve completely forgiven him, though, and felt bad about how mad they’d been, which points to there being some sort of excuse, or at least him being some kind of decent person one-on-one. I’ve read that theory too — that he’s just incredibly socially awkward. It’s the mouthing off to the judges that’s really gotten to me lately, though. I liked him a lot at the beginning because I bought his story — his dad not believing in him, etc. And I liked that he didn’t look like a usual pop star, and just…bleh. Now I just want him gone. And doubly so after last night, when the bottom was him, Bo, and Nadia, and the latter two my favorite contestants, and the only people I’ve voted for this time around, which pretty much tells me I need to not vote again because clearly I’ve cursed them. (Okay, I don’t *really* believe that, but.)

Um, anyway. Constantine has pretty much been great the past two weeks, much as I hate to admit it. Last week was show tunes, so that’s unsurprising, but…bleh. I will resist.
